Mission and Background

Zygote Press has been promoting contemporary fine art printmaking for over 20 years by providing an affordable, professional workspace for Cleveland artists. Zygote is a 501c3 organization with two Cleveland, Ohio locations: a workshop and gallery space in the Arts Quarter district of the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood and a workshop in the Waterloo Arts District neighborhood. Zygote is member-supported and receives additional funding from artist studio rental, private and community foundations, and government funders including Ohio Arts Council, Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Zygote’s annual budget is approximately $350,000 and currently has a staff of two full-time employees and four part-time employees.

Zygote initiates projects and programs in direct response to its neighborhoods and art community needs and has a proven track record for creating successful partnerships. As a result, Zygote’s growth has skyrocketed over the past several years. Artists here continue to generate work while earning revenue through sales, teaching, and contract printing in a collaborative environment. Zygote’s community-centered programs, classes, exhibitions, and cross-sector initiatives have expanded its initial impact from a provider of studio space and basic printmaking facilities to be a regular destination for international resident artists, offering hands-on programs to youth and collaborative groups, and has become a resource for arts organizations to create limited editions by artists.

For more information about Zygote, please visit www.zygotepress.org.

Zygote is thrilled to announce a 2016 grant for $20,000 from the  National Endowment of the Arts

Cleveland, Ohio—In its first 50 years, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awarded more than $5 billion in grants to recipients in every state and U.S. jurisdiction, the only arts funder in the nation to do so. Today, the NEA announced awards totaling more than $27.6 million in its first funding round of fiscal year 2016, including an Art Works award $20,000 to Zygote Press to support our exhibitions and residencies and the 20 FREE THE INK events taking place throughout the region.

The Art Works category supports the creation of work and presentation of both new and existing work, lifelong learning in the arts, and public engagement with the arts through 13 arts disciplines or fields.

NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, “The arts are part of our everyday lives – no matter who you are or where you live – they have the power to transform individuals, spark economic vibrancy in communities, and transcend the boundaries across diverse sectors of society. Supporting projects like Zygote’s offers more opportunities to engage in the arts every day.”

Liz Maugans, the Co-founder and Executive Director responds, ”Zygote is thrilled to be thriving locally, nationally and internationally and our entire artistic community feels so validated by our contribution to our grassroots efforts to this region’s artistic and cultural vitality. In our 20th year, Zygote will celebrate by taking it  to the streets through our Free The Ink 20 hands-on “Maker and Taker” presence at festivals, fairs and city-wide events.”

2016 programming will highlight Printmaking’s democratic nature and open philosophy that will take our programming out to new audiences. To celebrate Zygote’s 20th Anniversary, programs and exhibitions will focus on collaborations between artists and the public via tours, public festivals, exhibitions and the creation of new artwork. Our artist residencies and printed editions at Ink House, the publishing annex, will launch us into our next 20 years.

To join the Twitter conversation about this announcement, please use #NEAFall15. For more information on projects included in the NEA grant announcement, go to arts.gov

Behrang Samadzadegan is the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion resident working at Zygote Press. Behrang is a visual artist from Tehran, Iran, where he creates installations, videos, paintings and print-based works. His work is deeply rooted in community engagement through his investigations of social and cultural identity. Investigating the historical documents and images that seek out the real truth in political and social imagery, that is not represented in the real. He researches both the possibility and impossibility of “image” constructs. Please join us Friday, November 6th from 6-9pm for an opening reception in our gallery. This event is free and open to the public, light refreshments will be served.

September 14, 2015
The last few years at Zygote Press have been especially busy, including the increasing success of ZPASS, the residential space above our shop, which makes it possible for us to bring in more national and international resident artists, the expansion of staff, which has allowed us to both increase and improve the services we offer, and the grand opening of Ink House, a contract printing studio anchored in the burgeoning Collinwood Arts District. This year, as we look toward 2016, we anticipate even greater growth with Ink House’s inaugural year already booked, exciting collaborations and exhibitions on the calendar, and the implementation of new green shop practices, which will not only benefit current renters and the environment, but will also make the shop more pleasant and accessible to everyone.

It is with this in mind, that we ask you to consider becoming a member of Zygote Press today! Membership is not just for artists and is about much more than general support for the arts. Being a member makes you an active participant in the revitalization of our community. These numbers go to funders as well as legislators and speak volumes about what the arts in Cuyahoga County mean to all of us, and that kind of support goes well beyond dollars. Last but not least, we also make available to our members a number of “perks” including: discounts on workshops and in our retail shop, framing discounts from partner businesses, invitations to exclusive members events, opportunities to show and sell original work, and an invitation to participate in our annual Holiday Show.

It is an immensely exciting time to be a part of the arts community in Northeast Ohio and we look forward to having you join us! Oh, won’t you join us? click here

Memeography, Iconography in the 21st Century Curated by Jennifer Finkel & Bellamy Printz Opening Reception June 19th, 6-8pm

In a culture where new channels of social and other media create images that go globally viral in a matter of minutes, Memeography looks at contemporary uses of personal and political iconography.  In this dizzying digital environment, artists identify  with specific objects or concepts as a way to communicate a larger message. The artists in Memeography explore a broad range of themes using a variety of signs, symbols, motifs and marks that are instantly recognizable yet highly personal.

The word iconography literally means “image writing”. Iconography studies the identification, description, and the interpretation of the content of images, not artistic style. Using this concept,  the artists included in this exhibition examine notions of societal constructs and contemporary values.  While some of the artists use symbolism within their imagery, others included here adapt specific forms that are ubiquitous in our day-to-day lives.  Politics, economics, medicine, Utopian communities and popular culture– are a few of the subjects that artists in Memeography communicate through the integration of personal and contemporary icons. Open to the public June 12 – July 30, 2015.

Welcome Patti Fields & Ray Juaire as this year’s AIR artists.

Patti & Ray will be working in Zygote’s studio this summer. Stay tuned for more details. Meanwhile save the date for their closing reception and artist talk.

Closing Reception September 26th 2-4pm   ** Artist talk 3pm **

The full run of the exhibition is September 4th through October 3rd, 2015.

Patti Fields and Ray Juaire work and live in the Cleveland area. They both attended The Cleveland Institute of Art where they met and began their collaboration over 20 years ago. Fields, a trained Metalsmith, often focuses on the smallest of details within her jewelry and sculptural work, while Juaire comes from a background in Painting, Sculpture, and Photography. Together, they create objects that utilize both their vision, interests, and skills.

They often transform a variety of media to create artwork that, at times, symbolizes their professional and personal relationship and explores issues of place and memory. Their work can be singular or done in small series that play with balance, utilizing dynamic forms, conceptual narratives, and a re-imagined history of the objects they incorporate in each of their pieces. They create new histories in the combinations of fabricated and found objects and work to create metaphors for the nucleus of human, scientific, and metaphysical relationships.
