June 15 deadlines for residency & curatorial proposal

June 15, 2016 is the next deadline for our 2-week residency and for curatorial proposals.
Both are wonderful opportunities with small stipends. Our 2-week resident artists live upstairs in ZPASS and have full access to the studio. What more could you want?

T’Ain’t Nobody’s Business if I Do

Zygote Press is pleased to present the first solo Cleveland exhibition by Albanian born Italian artist Anila Rubiku who is featuring her new work about chains and their collective meaning as universal signifiers; for the enigma of love, loss and longing. Rubiku has married lyrics from the American blues songbook to her sculpture, silk screens, charcoal works.

Besides her work for this solo show, Anila is working with the Thomas Jefferson Newcomers Academy students who will presenting their work at Zygote in the near future. She has also presented her work to the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Social Practice Class and Laurel School.

Anila Rubiku is the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion resident working at Zygote Press. The Cleveland foundation supports artists for 3 months residencies in Cleveland.

Anila Rubiku studied at the Tirana Academy of Arts (1994) and did her post graduate work in Milan at the Brera Academy (2000). At present she works between Milan, Tirana and Toronto.

Zygote is pleased to announce our June WIP guest facilitator, SPACES Art Writer-in-Residence, Jillian Steinhauer. WIP sessions are free and open to all artists working in different disciplines. This program is geared for the non-student artists who are disconnected from the critical feedback that is offered at the university level. All of the sessions are held at Zygote Press, Inc. (ZPI) and all participants must be a current Zygote member. The goal is not to show work that is completed but “in progress”. Each critique is 15 minutes long with up to eight participants. The conversation will be led by Jillian with welcomed feedback and ideas from the crowd. Sign ups are first come, first serve. Jillian Steinhauer is the senior editor of Hyperallergic and a writer living in Brooklyn (as well as a sometime copy editor and proofreader). Her work has appeared in Slate, the Los Angeles Review of Books, The Paris Review Daily, Longreads, and other publications. She was the winner of the 2014 Best Art Reporting award from the US chapter of the International Association of Art Critics, and holds a master’s degree in Cultural Reporting and Criticism from New York University and a bachelor’s in Comparative Literature from the University of Michigan.

WIP in July

WIP Sessions:
Critique sessions take place on Saturdays from 10-noon on March 5th and July 9th. Every artist participant MUST BE A ZYGOTE MEMBER. These sessions are all free an open to all artists working in different disciplines. This program is geared for the non-student artists who are disconnected from the critical feedback that is offered at the university level. All of the sessions will be held at Zygote Press. The goal is not to show work that is completed but “in progress”. Each WIP session will have a different facilitator and in 2016 we focus on two Akron curators. Each session has eight participants who have 15 minutes of time to gain feedback about their work and ideas. Anyone can take part as an audience member and also contribute to the conversation in an open forum.

Zygote Press RE/UNITE marks the press’s 20th anniversary and features prints by over 25 of the regions most acclaimed artists. Some, such as Gloria Plevin, Margaret Yuko Kimura, Michael Loderstedt, have returned to the press throughout their careers; others, including Michaelangelo Lovelace, Amy Casey and, countless other national and internationally known resident artists, are more recent additions to the roster. All share an enthusiasm for expanding their artistic practice by making prints.
