The following print classes are our current options led by Zygote’s skilled instructors and guest artists. Any course can be scheduled by a group or by an individual interested in learning more about printmaking or expanding their printing skills. Payment can be made on line or, if you prefer to pay by check, send it to Liz Maugans at Zygote Press 1410 E 30th st, Cleveland, OH 44114.
Screenprinting 101 will give you the basic steps on how to transfer your designs to posters or apparel. The class includes the use of Zygote screens, materials, and equipment plus a free pass to come back and work during one of our open studio sessions (a $20 value).
Screenprinting is an art form known for its bold graphics and quick-print ability to do large runs. A close cousin of stenciling, screenprinting is easy to learn, and a little harder to master. This class will get you started learning how to print on paper and fabric, gradually increasing in complexity and nuance. With the ongoing support of a pro to help trouble-shoot along the way, students will be familiar with dark room exposure, mesh count, screen tension, ink consistency, and registration. Students will be able to develop their imagery, be it hand-drawn illustration or digital files, to work best as a print. By the end of the class, students will know their way around the print shop, and be well equipped to continue printing independently at Zygote Press.
Dissect: methodically cut up (a body, part, or plant) in order to study its internal parts.
Redirect: direct (something) to a new or different place or purpose.
Purpose of the Workshop: In this workshop we will learn how to transfer a photographic image from inkjet print or vintage magazine to linen. We will then discuss different techniques for incorporating them into charcoal drawings in order to merge the two mediums.
The Risograph is an automated duplicator from Japan that efficiently produces offset-like photocopies. Though not originally intended for artistic application, the machine has recently gained traction (and notoriety) in small-press culture for its distinct footprint and efficiently, as well as being rather finicky.
This workshop will walk students through the fundamentals of Risograph printing for making books and fine art prints, and familiarize students with techniques to best reproduce their imagery. Students will become acquainted with the mechanics of the printer and learn basic maintenance, including how to change the master roll and a drum’s ink tube. Lastly, students will learn how to best design for the Risograph as it relates to book/zine structures. Students will learn ink drying time, ink density, paper options, registration, and simple ways to create pamphlets and large-run book folds. Everyone will leave with authorization to continue making Risograph prints at Zygote Press.

Come unwind after work with us at Zygote with this wonderful introductory session of monoprinting with the happy hour QUEEN Liz Maugans. Drinks and snacks will be inspiring as you create and take home some wonderful prints and cards.
Make unique holiday cards this season! In this fun and relaxed class, artist Erin Adair will teach you how to use letterpress and create personalized cards.
Print your own greeting cards using Zygote’s traditional printing presses. The tactile quality of ink pressed into paper will surely leave an impression on the lucky recipients of your handmade cards!
Students will be able to set their own short saying or phrase and (if desired) combine it with vintage relief blocks featuring festive illustrations. This workshop combines an overview of letterpress printing and history with hands-on art making, and it is a great way to try out a new hobby before taking a longer class. Students can bring any blank cards they desire (so everyone can pick out their favorite size and color). Taking turns, each student will lock up their type and independently print with our platen presses. Students will each make about 20 cards and are encouraged to make a few extras to trade as well! The class is limited to six students so that everyone has time to run a press independently.
Basic white 5×7” flat cards are available for students who do not bring their own folded cards
WIP (Works In Progress)
Critique sessions take place on Saturdays from 10-noon . These sessions are all free an open to all artists working in different disciplines. This program is geared for the non-student artists who are disconnected from the critical feedback that is offered at the university level. All of the sessions will be held at Zygote Press, Inc. (ZPI) The goal is not to show work that is completed but “in progress”. Each WIP session will have a different facilitator and in 2016 we focus on two Akron curators. Each session has eight participants and they have 15 minutes of time to gain feedback about their work and ideas. Other people also contribute to the conversation in an open forum. Sign ups are first come, first serve. To participate, please contact Corrie Slawson. corrie at zygotepres dot org
Our next WIP sessions are March 25 & June 3, 2017
