With Wendy Partridge
Screen Shot 2014-12-22 at 5.56.21 PM  $275

Learn simple and effective book binding techniques; geared toward printmakers but applicable to a myriad of paper arts.

Do you want to explore making artist’s books? Are you interested in the sequence, narrative, and dimensionality afforded by book structures? Would you rather spend your time printing than binding? Then this two day workshop is for you. It will cover basic book binding techniques (folding, sewing, gluing) and introduce some simple structures that allow multiple variations. You will leave the class with models and processes to help you get from rough ideas to finished pieces.

For the class you will need a cutting mat, xacto knife and blades, bone folder (available at Utrecht and the Morgan), and a cheap, stiff glue brush (approximately ¼”-½” wide). If you have them, also bring a straight edge, etching needle (or a small awl or a dissecting needle), linen thread, large eyed needle (like an embroidery needle), paper you like and have around the studio, and old proofs on both text weight and cover weight paper.

These tutorial/demo-style sessions are combined with membership and provide an excellent overview by some of our best and most astute experts in the field. These primers include one free Open Studio pass.

NOTE:  For those who want to get started right away with Monoprinting, since both of these sessions are offered on a Saturday, you can use your Open Studio pass and stay all afternoon for our 12-4 open studio.  Bring your lunch and enjoy printing all day!  For all open studio sessions (also held on Wednesdays from 12-4) there is an intern available to answer any questions you might have about the presses, inks, processes, etc.

Price: All Primers are two hours and are $75 (Best deal in town with a $55 savings!)

Open Studio hours are Wednesdays and Saturdays 12 noon to 4 pm.

Members pay $20, Non-members pay $30 for use of shop and assistance by studio assistants.

ONE-ON-ONES

From past class evaluations, we have found that flexibility works best for our student participants and sometimes classes are not available when you want to take them. If this is the case, One-on-Ones are for you! It gives you a chance to work independently with one of our skilled artist-printmakers to learn intaglio, relief, screenprinting, letterpress, digital or alternative techniques.

Please contact info@zygotepress.org for a roster of artist-print specialists and we will connect you. We charge $35 per hour-($10 for Zygote and $25 for teachers)-some classes take just a few hours –some take a little longer. This is a great way to learn as you go so you can begin utilizing our Open Studio sessions or commence renting a locker or studio.

Private one-on-one classes: $25 per hour for teacher + $10 per hour for Zygote. Get a One-on-One Quote here.
