The following print classes are our current options for workshops led by Zygote’s skilled instructors and guest artists. Workshops are offered periodically. Any course can be scheduled by a group or by an individual interested in learning more about printmaking or expanding their printing skills.
Spend Valentine’s morning enjoying breakfast treats and making unique monoprints with your honey! Use stencils, textures, drawing, color and advanced techniques such as chine colle. Create your own or collaborate with your sweetie to make prints you can take home and frame! No experience necessary.
Learn simple and effective book binding techniques; geared toward printmakers but applicable to a myriad of paper arts.
Do you want to explore making artist’s books? Are you interested in the sequence, narrative, and dimensionality afforded by book structures? Would you rather spend your time printing than binding? Then this two day workshop is for you. It will cover basic book binding techniques (folding, sewing, gluing) and introduce some simple structures that allow multiple variations. You will leave the class with models and processes to help you get from rough ideas to finished pieces.
For the class you will need a cutting mat, xacto knife and blades, bone folder (available at Utrecht and the Morgan), and a cheap, stiff glue brush (approximately ¼”-½” wide). If you have them, also bring a straight edge, etching needle (or a small awl or a dissecting needle), linen thread, large eyed needle (like an embroidery needle), paper you like and have around the studio, and old proofs on both text weight and cover weight paper.
In contemporary printmaking many artists like to utilize several processes in one print to accomplish their aesthetic goals. Lisa Schonberg and Denise Stewart will guide you through the development of ideas as you print with multiple layers using both monoprint and screenprint techniques. Loosen up with imagery and ideas with this spontaneous approach to the development of one-of-a-kind prints.
Explore color, texture, and layering while learning the basics as well as more advanced monoprinting and silkscreening techniques.
Bring a friend, have a drink, and learn how to apply your own custom decals to ceramic dishes and tiles.
This class will use a polymer Xante matrix to create immediate graphic images using Sharpie + other permanent markers to create the drawing. This process is similar to a paper litho but with more longevity. The plate[12×15] + a Sharpie marker included. Bring drawings and images with you to class. Paper litho aka Xerox Litho will also be demonstrated. This class includes a free Open Studio pass.

From past class evaluations, we have found that flexibility works best for our student participants and sometimes classes are not available when you want to take them. If this is the case, One-on-Ones are for you! It gives you a chance to work independently with one of our skilled artist-printmakers to learn intaglio, relief, screenprinting, letterpress, digital or alternative techniques.
Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for a roster of artist-print specialists and we will connect you. We charge $35 per hour-($10 for Zygote and $25 for teachers)-some classes take just a few hours –some take a little longer. This is a great way to learn as you go so you can begin utilizing our Open Studio sessions or commence renting a locker or studio.
