Zygote hosts children, families, organizations, and community groups to give people of all ages hands-on printmaking instruction and point-and-look tours that inspire. Youth Workshops complement the curriculum to give young artists high-quality arts education with custom-tailored themes — and introduce them to accessible local programs and diverse learning opportunities.
Zygote can also schedule visits to coincide with curator presentations, exhibiting-artist talks, and archive tours.

WHEN? — Zygote tours (with the exception of Collectors Tours) are held Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9 am to 12 noon. Please make your request for a tour three weeks in advance, so staff can coordinate the schedule and plan your educational visit.
“I just wanted to thank you again for hosting my classes today at Zygote. I saw a new energy inside them that I have not seen before. I hope they can bring that same energy to my classes. They really enjoyed making the prints and stressed to me that was one of their favorite parts.” Sean, Trinity High School
WHERE? — Zygote is located in the Asia Town District of the Saint Clair-Superior neighborhood. Taste Buds the restaurant is located in the same building. Two other arts organizations are located near Zygote —The Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation (at 1754 East 47th St.) and the Cleveland Print Room (around the corner at 2550 Superior Ave). Many class tours schedule visits to these organizations while they have available transportation.
A SHORT TOUR — THE ZYGOTE ORIENTATION TOUR (ZOT)
This is a general 1-½ hour tour of the Zygote Press shop and gallery. Visitors see examples of archive prints and get the chance to see how prints are created. ZOT also gives visitors a chance to connect with artist renters and coordinate visits from exhibiting and resident artists. Group size is limited to 30 people. Email Liz Maugans at: liz (at) zygotepress (dot) org for more information.
A MEDIUM TOUR — THE LIVE TOUR
This two-to-three-hour tour includes everything covered in the Zygote Orientation Tour (ZOT), plus one to two demonstration-style artist talks — including explanations of how various equipment works. Group size is limited to 30 people. Note that a morning session (from 10 am to 12 noon) is recommended. Email Liz Maugans at: liz (at) zygotepress (dot) org for more information.
A LONG TOUR –GET INKY
This four-to-six-hour tour includes everything covered in the Zygote Orientation Tour (ZOT), plus sessions that let visitors operate the press equipment. Because this is a full-group-participation event, the schedule is adapted to how many visitors are in the party, and the complexity of the printmaking techniques the organizer picks for the session. Note that consultation is necessary before the tour is booked.
Group size is limited to the number of people that the chosen activity can accommodate — although larger parties can be split into smaller groups if multiple workstations are of interest. This tour is perfect for team-building projects and print parties. Email Liz Maugans at: liz (at) zygotepress (dot) org for more information.
Zygote has established long-term after-school programs and other educational programs — both onsite (held at Zygote’s primary location at East 30th St.) and offsite (usually held at schools). To setup such programs, a person from the Zygote staff consults with a program manager for facilitation, scheduling, and curriculum programming. Email Liz Maugans at: liz (at) zygotepress (dot) org for more information.
Collector’s tours are scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 6 and 8 pm. In these sessions, Zygote offers educational tours and demonstrations like print collectors, museum docents, colleges and universities, and other visitors. Email Liz Maugans at: liz (at) zygotepress (dot) org for more information.
In addition, for some organizations, Zygote Press offers tours pro gratis — most often, to accommodate the lean budgets of nonprofit institutions and schools. To this end, Zygote offers six to eight Zygote orientation tours (ZOTs) for free each year. If you’d like your school class or other organization to be considered, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and tell us about your group and your interest in visiting.
