Nineteen years ago, Zygote Press opened its doors at East 72nd and St. Clair, creating a space for artists to make print-based work. Founders Bellamy Printz, Kelley Novak, Liz Maugans and Joe Sroka’s bold venture has been a staple of the region’s visual arts scene since 1996. In that time, Zygote has invited hundreds of artists through the doors to create new work. Zygote has been collecting work from visiting artists since its inception and this show delved into that history presenting a stunning and varied collection of contemporary print works.

Mauricio Cristobal Cortes Fuentes
Creative Fusion Exhibition

Mauricio Cristobal Cortes Fuentes is a master goldsmith and printmaker from Santiago, Chile. Fuentes has studied with master goldsmith Waldo Villalón. He holds a master goldsmith degree from Liceo Experimental Artistico and a degree in printmaking from Universidad de Chile. This exhibition presents new work produced at Zygote during his three month residency supported by the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion program. This body of work translates Fuentes’ intensive training as a goldsmith into reproducible media, using etching and engraving to create intricate intaglio prints.
Memeography, Iconography in the 21st Century

In a culture where new channels of social and other media create images that go globally viral in a matter of minutes, Memeography looks at contemporary uses of personal and political iconography. In this dizzying digital environment, artists identify with specific objects or concepts as a way to communicate a larger message. The artists in Memeography explore a broad range of themes using a variety of signs, symbols, motifs and marks that are instantly recognizable yet highly personal.

New Works by Patti Fields and Ray Juaire

Patti Fields and Ray Juaire began their artistic collaboration over 20 years ago while they were both attending The Cleveland Institute of Art. Fields is a trained Metalsmith and often focuses on the smallest of details within her jewelry and sculptural work. Juaire comes from a background in Painting, Sculpture, and Photography. Their collaborative work yields objects that unite their visions and skills.
